CODING ALERT

The American Academy of Pediatrics recently released data from a nationwide survey of pediatricians. The survey, "Pediatric Service Utilization, Fees and Managed Care Arrangements: 1999 Report Based on 1997 Data", was devised to:

  • help pediatricians compare their utilization patterns with those of their peers, and

  • assess pediatrician fees and characteristics of managed care participation.

Results showed the most commonly utilized evaluation and management code was 99213, for a mid level office visit with an established patient.

Commonly performed procedural services included:

  1. drainage of a skin abscess (10060)

  2. repair of superficial wounds (12001, 12002, and 12011)

  3. removal of impacted cerumen (69210)

  4. comprehensive hearing test (92567)

  5. subcutaneous or intramuscular injection (90782)

  6. immunotherapy injection (95115)

Results showed that almost 67% of primary care pediatricians’ patients were covered by some form of private insurance, including managed care, while only 51% of pediatric subspecialists patients were insured privately.

Analysis also revealed that pediatric subspecialists received 31% of their revenue from Medicaid, primary care pediatricians 21%.      ---------------(AAP News)
